Local SEO: Getting the Most From Your Google Business Profile

For any business with a physical location or a defined service area, the Google Business Profile is often the highest-return marketing asset there is. It appears above the organic results, on Maps, and in the local pack, and for many searches it is where the customer decides who to call.

A complete, active profile can generate more enquiries than the website itself. Yet most profiles are set up once and never touched again. Here is how to treat it as a live channel.

Complete every field: category, services, hours, attributes, description, and a local phone number. Google rewards completeness, and each field is a chance to match a search.

Choose the primary category precisely. This is one of the strongest local ranking signals. Pick the most specific category that fits, then add secondary categories for your other services.

Keep NAP consistent everywhere. Your Name, Address, and Phone number should be identical, character for character, on your site, your profile, and every directory. Inconsistency dilutes trust signals.

Post regularly. Offers, events, and updates through Google Posts keep the profile active and give returning searchers something current to see.

Earn and answer reviews. Review count, rating, and recency all matter. Ask every satisfied customer, make it a one-tap link, and reply to every review, positive or negative, in a measured tone.

Add real photos often. Profiles with fresh, genuine photos get materially more views and clicks than those relying on a logo and a stock shot. Use the Q&A section too: seed it with the questions customers actually ask, answer them clearly, and monitor it since anyone can post.

Track performance in the profile insights: how people find you, what they do next, and which queries surface you. Localised landing pages on your own site, linked from the profile, reinforce the whole effort.
