PPC Management Services: What You Get and What It Should Cost

PPC management services are one of the easier marketing services to evaluate objectively, because the platform's own data makes performance visible in a way SEO and branding work often are not — which makes it worth knowing exactly what you should expect for the money.

A proper PPC management service includes, at minimum: campaign structure and keyword strategy, ad copy creation and testing, bid and budget management, negative keyword maintenance, landing page recommendations, conversion tracking setup, and regular reporting tied to cost per acquisition and return on ad spend, not just clicks and impressions.

Pricing typically follows one of three models. A flat monthly fee, common for smaller budgets, usually ranges from $500 to $2,500 per month for management alone, separate from ad spend. A percentage of spend, common for larger budgets, typically runs 10–20% of monthly ad spend, with the percentage often decreasing as spend increases. Hybrid models combine a smaller flat fee with a lower percentage, which tends to align incentives best across a wide range of budget sizes.

Be specific about what counts as ad spend versus management fee in any proposal. A common point of confusion is an agency quoting "a $3,000 monthly package" that turns out to include the ad spend itself, leaving very little actually going to management — always ask for the split explicitly before agreeing to a number.

Ask how conversion tracking is set up and verified. PPC performance data is only as good as the tracking behind it, and a management service that has not properly configured conversion tracking is optimizing campaigns against incomplete or wrong data, which can look like good performance while actually wasting a meaningful share of the budget.

Check how quickly the agency responds to underperformance. A good PPC manager reviews account performance at least weekly for active campaigns and can explain specifically what changed and why when performance shifts. An agency that only touches the account once a month, regardless of what the price implies about active management, is not really managing it.

Set a realistic minimum ad spend before engaging a management service at all. Below roughly $1,000–$1,500 per month in ad spend, the platform often does not have enough data to optimize effectively, and management fees can end up being a disproportionate share of total cost. Below that threshold, self-management or a lighter consulting arrangement is often the more sensible choice.

It is also worth asking how the agency handles seasonal or promotional periods, since a static "set and forget" campaign structure leaves real performance on the table during your highest-value trading windows. A management service that proactively adjusts budgets and creative around your business calendar, rather than waiting for you to ask, is doing the job properly rather than just maintaining the account.
